Privacy Policy

Summary

BiasFeed is a small, independent website. We do not run third-party advertising, we do not load any third-party analytics or tracking scripts, and we do not sell, share, or otherwise transfer your information to anyone. We collect the bare minimum needed to operate the site and to understand how its sharing features are used.

What we collect

  • Server access logs. Our web server and our content delivery network (Cloudflare) record standard request information for every visit, including your IP address, the page you requested, the time of the request, the referring page, and your browser's user agent string. This is operationally necessary to deliver the site, detect abuse, and diagnose problems. These logs are retained for a short period (typically days to weeks, depending on the system) and are not used to build any profile of you.
  • Share event records. If you press one of the share buttons on an article (X, Facebook, Email, Copy Link), we record an event in our own database noting the article you shared, which version of it (Facts, Centrist, Left-Biased, Right-Biased, or Compare), the platform you chose, and your browser's user agent string. We do not record your IP address or any identifier that would link the event back to you specifically. This data is used in aggregate to understand which content and which framings get shared.
  • Admin sessions. The site has an administration area that is not accessible to public visitors. If you are an administrator and log in there, a standard PHP session cookie is set so you stay signed in. This cookie is not used anywhere on the public site.

What we do not collect

  • We do not load Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any similar third-party tracking script.
  • We do not set advertising or marketing cookies. The public site sets no cookies of its own.
  • We do not require an account to read articles. There is no sign-up.
  • We do not collect names, email addresses, or any contact details unless you choose to email us directly (see "Contacting us" below).

How we use the information

Server logs are used to operate the site, prevent and investigate abuse, and diagnose technical problems. Share event records are used in aggregate to inform editorial decisions about which kinds of stories and framings are interesting to readers. Neither dataset is used to advertise to you, to build a marketing profile, or to share with third parties.

Sharing your information

We do not sell, rent, trade, or share your information with third parties for their own purposes. The only routine third party involved in handling site traffic is Cloudflare, our content delivery network and DNS provider, whose servers receive every request to the site as a necessary part of delivering it. Cloudflare's own privacy practices are documented at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.

Email correspondence

If you choose to email us at [email protected] (for example, to report an error, suggest an article, or request a takedown), we will hold that correspondence for as long as is reasonably necessary to handle your request and any follow-up. We do not add the address to any marketing list because we do not run a marketing list.

Access, correction, and deletion

If you believe we hold information that relates to you and you want it accessed, corrected, or deleted, email us at [email protected] and describe what you are asking for. We will respond within a reasonable time. In practice, because we do not link share events to identifiable individuals and we do not collect names or contact details from general visitors, the realistic scope of any such request is limited to (a) email correspondence you have sent us and (b) takedown of an article that names or relates to you.

Children

BiasFeed is not directed at children. The site contains political commentary that may not be suitable for younger readers. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.

Governing law

BiasFeed is operated from Australia. This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of Australia. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au) is the relevant regulator for privacy complaints in Australia.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

If we change this policy, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change to reflect the date of the most recent change. We may post a notice about significant changes on the site. We will not retroactively reduce your privacy rights without your consent.
